What is Lync Web App?

Lync Web App is the browser-based version of Lync 2010 that allows people who don’t have a Lync account and haven’t installed the Lync client to participate in Lync meetings, using either a Windows or Macintosh operating system. It’s a “light” program that takes up very little space on your hard drive and is relatively quick to start using.

Who is it for?

Jan 22, 2016  I found that if a MAC user joins the Skype meeting with Skype for business Web APP using any browser and share the screen they are not able to give control to anyone. Neither MAC users are able to control any shared content. Is this a limitation for Skype web App in MAC? Oct 28, 2012  Microsoft Lync Basic 2013 gives you instant messaging (IM), audio and video calls, online meetings, availability (presence) information, and sharing capabilities all from one, easy-to-use program. It’s a slimmer version of the full Lync. May 01, 2015  Microsoft is also working on a similar update for Lync Online that is scheduled for early 2015. The upcoming update will enable Lync Online users to join meetings by using Lync Web App in a 64-bit version of Chrome in Mac. This update will improve better user experience and will provide the same Lync Web App experience as in Lync Server 2013. To use Lync Web App, you’ll need a supported operating system and browser. For details about the various operating systems and browsers that are supported, along with any limitations, see the TechNet article Lync Web App Supported Platforms. Feb 13, 2020  Deploy Web downloadable clients in Skype for Business Server. 2/13/2020; 5 minutes to read +7; In this article. Summary: Deploy the Skype for Business 2015 Web App and Skype Meetings App used with Skype for Business Server. Skype for Business Web App is an Internet Information Services (IIS) web client that is installed on the server running Skype for. Oct 11, 2018 I was using Skype for Business web app under Chrome browser on my mac but since a couple of months on Mohave OSX and on previous one I started to face an issue with black screen isntead of shared content. I installed Skype for Business plugin on Safari and used it successfully before upgrading to Mohave. Feb 16, 2018 This table compares the Meetings features available to users of the Skype for Business client, Skype for Business Web App, Skype Meetings App, and Lync Web App. Lync Web App is listed for feature comparison purposes: a user would only be downloading and using Lync Web App if the meeting was hosted on a Lync 2013 server.

Lync Web App is designed mainly for external partners, such as salespeople, who are invited to Lync meetings, but it is also useful for employees who are not at their usual computer at meeting time, or have not yet upgraded to Lync 2010.

To check whether you or a colleague will be able to use Lync Web App, see Supported platforms for Lync Web App.

What can it do?

During a meeting, Lync Web App provides many Lync features; these include meeting-wide instant messaging (IM), phone-based audio, file distribution, presenting with Microsoft PowerPoint presentation graphics program, and desktop and program sharing.

Notes:

  • Sharing and presenting features are dependent on permission levels set by the meeting organizer, so they may not be available. Only users with presenter privileges can share files and programs.

  • The first time that you initiate a sharing session, you will be prompted to download the required sharing plug-in.

Lync Web App cannot be used to schedule meetings or to exchange instant messages with individual meeting attendees.

Where do I start?

In addition to needing one of the supported operating system and Internet browser combinations, an Internet connection, a phone (unless you’re also running Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 R2), and an invitation to a Lync meeting, you will also need the Microsoft Silverlight 4.0 browser plug-in, or a later version of Silverlight, installed on your computer before your first online meeting.

For a list of supported operating system and browser combinations, see Supported platforms for Lync Web App.

To download Silverlight, visit the following Web site: Download Microsoft Silverlight.

With these requirements in place, you’ll be ready to get started. To learn how, see Quick Start: Participate in online meetings with Lync Web App.

The Lync Web App plug-in is required for audio, video, and screen sharing during a Lync Meeting. If you’re having trouble with plug-in, try these suggestions first:

  1. Make sure your computer operating system and web browser are on the list of supported platforms.

  2. Go to Control Panel > Programs and features and, if required, uninstall existing versions of the plug in.

  3. Open an InPrivate browsing session in Internet Explorer and try joining the meeting again. If that succeeds, consider clearing your browser cache to remove obsolete credentials that might be interfering with sign-in.

If you still can’t install the plug-in, review this list of issues and errors.
